Here are some things I can remember as a kid, that make me feel pretty old now:
  • Watching first run episodes of great shows like Gilligan's Island, The Brady Bunch, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Get Smart, The Beverly Hillbillies, The Andy Griffith Show, Green Acres, McHales, Navy, The Monkees, The Wild, Wild, West, Bonanza, My Favorite Martian, and The Dick Van Dyke show. I was about 5 years old when most shows switched from black and white to color. Many of the reruns I watched as a kid were in black and white. I distinctly remember the excitement in the air when The Wonderful World of Disney changed to The Wonderful World of Color. The show started in black and white, and then Tinkerbell came out and splashed the screen with color. Good stuff!
  • Only three channels - ABC, NBC, CBS.
  • I remember staying up past the end of the "TV day", when all three channels would change to the test pattern, or go to static.
  • I remember being up before the "TV day" started, and watching the broadcasts begin again with the National Anthem and footage of jets flying over.
  • I remember frequent sonic booms when jets actually would fly over the city.
I remember at Grandma's & Grandpa's trailer they used one of those wash buckets with the roller attached to squeeze the water out of the clothes, after you washed them by hand.
  • I remember using the ticket books at Disneyland, and wishing I had more E-Tickets.

  • I remember when the principal kept a paddle in his office - and used it.
  • I remember almost never being required to wear a seatbelt and riding while laying on the back dash panel of the car.
  • Of course no Compact Disc's, computers, VCR's, DVD players, or microwave ovens.
  • No movie cineplexes. If a movie came out in the theater and you missed it - too bad. If it was really good, it might come to the theater again for a week or two encore, or you could wait several years and they might show it on TV; better not miss it then, because there was no recording it.
  • I remember seeing Chitty Chitty Bang Bang during its premier at the Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. I looked it up; it premiered in Dec. 1968. I was almost 8.
  • I remember my older siblings leaving their babies poopie cloth diapers to soak in the toilet and I'd have to find somewhere else to go.
  • Finally... I remember wishing I could be like Michael Jackson.
